Starlight Yoga

Cast Off Fishing Tournament

Saturday, Sept. 12, 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Folly Beach Pier

This summer, catch fish, fun and prizes during tournaments at the Folly Beach Pier and the Mount Pleasant Pier! Tournament registration is $12 for ages 13 and up, $9 for members of the military, $9 for seniors (60 and up), $9 for youth (12 and under), $5 for fishing pass members.

Dog Day Afternoon at Whirlin’ Waters

Sunday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark

Celebrate the dog days of summer with your four-legged best friend at the waterpark after the regular season ends. Dogs will have exclusive access to Otter Bay, the wave pool, and the lazy river (with 1-foot deep water) for an afternoon of splashing and play.Dippin’ Dots and Soca Stop will be open for concessions. Participants can register for one of two time slots during the day.

This program empowers adults 50+ to continue to explore, discover, and grow.Discover the exciting sport of rock climbing in a fun, supportive environment! We’ll introduce the basics of climbing, including equipment, safety, body positioning, and movement techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to climb our walls with the support of our trained staff while building confidence, strength, balance, and problem-solving skills. No prior climbing experience is necessary.

Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw

Ongoing, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Sept. 2, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 30, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Caw Caw Interpretive Center

Join us on one or more of our regular bird walks. Our trek through many distinct habitats will allow us to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies, and other organisms. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a flat, loop and benches are available along the trail route. The trails are unpaved. The program speed is moderately slow and will require periods of standing and gazing upwards.

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk

Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve

This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site boasts one of the largest bird lists in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see a variety of songbirds, seabirds, and shorebirds such as Painted Bunting, Sandwich Tern, Whimbrel, and much more.

Ready to take your climbing to the next level? This class covers the basics of lead climbing in the gym—how to clip safely, manage rope drag, belay a lead climber, and fall safely with confidence. We’ll walk you through key techniques and safety protocols, with plenty of hands-on practice. No prior lead experience needed, but participants should be comfortable top rope belaying and able to climb at a 5.9 level or higher. All gear provided; bring your own if you prefer.

The Bluest Dye: An Indigo-Dyeing Workshop

Saturday, Sept. 19, noon – 2 p.m.

Discover the world of indigo, a plant whose brilliant blue stretches across centuries, cultures, and communities. Join Cultural History Interpretive Lead Aide Kat Cutting at Caw Caw Interpretive Center for an immersive, hands-on workshop that blends history, science, creativity, and reflection. Learn how indigo became a major cash crop in colonial South Carolina, how enslaved African and African-descended men and women cultivated and processed the plant, and why indigo carries layered cultural memories for different individuals and communities. Then, roll up your sleeves and try your hand at dyeing your own t-shirt.

Dock Discovery

Join one of our naturalists at the fishing dock at James Island County Park. We’ll explore the marsh edges, the organisms that live underwater on the dock itself, and even microscopic plankton that drift their way down the creek. A net especially designed to trap tiny planktonic organisms will be used and microscopes will be set up at an indoor location to allow us to view this seldom seen world.

Surge and Spirit: Surviving the Lowcountry’s Greatest Storms

Friday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

James Island County Park

The Lowcountry is no stranger to storms. Hurricanes in the region have disproportionately impacted Gullah Geechee communities on James Island and the Sea Islands. Focusing on the 1885 cyclone, the 1893 Sea Islands hurricane, and Hurricane Hugo, this program explores how these storms shaped Black coastal life in the Lowcountry through experiences of loss, disruption, and survival over time.
