Charleston Roots & Plot
Deck The Y’alls centers its narrative around Charleston’s culinary scene and local hospitality. The plot follows Rachel, a sharp-witted New York baker who travels south to spend Christmas with her younger beau’s family in the Lowcountry.
However, winning over his family proves to be a challenge: his mother, Gladys Gibbes, is a formidable Charleston celebrity chef and a true “steel magnolia” who guards both her kitchen and her family with equal fervor. The comedic friction between New York holiday traditions and High Country Southern expectations forms the core of the story, with Charleston’s cobblestone streets, grand historic homes, and renowned food scene serving as the central backdrop.
Star-Studded Cast & Crew
The project reunites Oscar-winning talent and prominent industry creators:
Jessica Chastain & Octavia Spencer: Marking their first major comedic team-up since their acclaimed co-starring roles in The Help, Chastain and Spencer lead the project. Spencer stars as the formidable Charleston matriarch Gladys Gibbes, while Chastain plays the visiting baker Rachel.
Wanda Sykes: Joins the core cast, bringing her trademark comedic timing to the Lowcountry holiday chaos.
Behind the Camera: The original screenplay was written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, The Blackening) alongside Stefanie Williams. Production is backed by Sony Pictures, Sandbox Studios, and Chastain’s own banner, Freckle Films.
