Local and regional chefs and restaurants will go face to face — or in this case beak to beak — to see has the most delicious Southern fried chicken. This year, culinary students from Charleston County School District also will compete. The winner of the 2017 Southern Fried Chicken Challenge was Salthouse catering, taking home the main price plus the People’s Choice award.

“Last year we had more than 2,000 people come out to sample some amazing fried chicken recipes and we know this year the challenge will be even better,” said Jabari Seabrook, even director. “From the traditional to the innovative, this will be a chance to experience fried chicken like you’ve never experienced fried chicken before. We can’t wait to see what our chefs, restaurants and culinary students cook up this year.”

In addition to all the amazing fried chicken samples, spend the day listening to live music from The Dubplates, whose latest album “Box Full of Steel” topped the Billboard charts as the No. 1 reggae album. Also performing is musician Quentin Ravenel.

A portion of the proceeds from the Southern Fried Chicken Challenge will be donated to the Charleston Animal Society, MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, Charleston County School District Career & Technology Education programs, and YEScarolina (Youth Entrepreneurship South Carolina).

The Southern Fried Chicken Challenge is noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at North Charleston Riverfront Park, 1001 Everglades Ave. Purchase tickets at www.southernfriedchickenchallenge.com
