On Friday, June 16, Historic Charleston Foundation was thrilled with the announcement by the South Carolina State Ports Authority and the City of Charleston to start fresh on the redevelopment of Union Pier, a significant project that drew overwhelming community feedback. Charleston will need its citizens and leaders to remain enthusiastic, open to new ideas and engaged in the planning process that lies ahead. This moment provides a unique opportunity for Charleston that cannot be wasted. This process is far from over and the details are changing daily. The Conservation League, HCF and PSC remain steadfast in their shared vision for the redevelopment of Union Pier:

Union Pier must be resilient and embrace both the natural and historic features of the site.
Union Pier must be of appropriate size, scale and character to serve as an extension of our historic city.
Union Pier must provide real benefits to all people of Charleston, ranging from ample public green space to substantial affordable housing.

Next steps

Finally, after many months of public meetings, presentations and community input, the South Carolina Ports Authority announced that they were going to take the planning process in an alternative direction. The Union Pier Terminal Redevelopment planning process will now be led by the City of Charleston and the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Center for Livable Communities at the College of Charleston and important stakeholders, including the City of Charleston, the SC Ports Authority, Charleston residents and advocacy organizations will now be engaged directly in the planning process in an effort to once again create a plan for the site.
