South Carolina has 3 Nobel Laureates: Learn About The Palmetto State’s Native-Born Prize Winners

By Mark A Leon

South Carolina has produced three Nobel Prize recipients who were born in the state. Their groundbreaking work in physics, medicine, and pharmacology has transformed science and improved the lives of millions around the world.

Charles Hard Townes

Born: July 28, 1915
Died: January 27, 2015
Birthplace: Greenville, South Carolina

Charles H. Townes revolutionized modern science through his pioneering work in quantum electronics. His research led to the invention of the maser, which became the scientific foundation for the laser—technology now used in medicine, communications, manufacturing, astronomy, and countless everyday devices.

In 1964, Townes shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Nikolay Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov “for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle.”

Charles Hard Townes

Joseph Leonard Goldstein

Born: April 18, 1940
Birthplace: Sumter, South Carolina

Although he grew up in Kingstree, Goldstein was born in Sumter and became one of the world’s leading physician-scientists. Alongside colleague Michael Brown, he discovered how cells regulate cholesterol by using LDL receptors.

Their work fundamentally changed the understanding of cardiovascular disease and paved the way for treatments that have prevented millions of heart attacks and strokes.

In 1985, Goldstein received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for discoveries concerning the regulation of cholesterol metabolism.”

Joseph Leonard Goldstein

Robert Francis Furchgott

Born: June 4, 1916
Died: May 19, 2009
Birthplace: Charleston, South Carolina

Robert F. Furchgott made one of the most important medical discoveries of the twentieth century when he demonstrated that the body produces nitric oxide, a molecule that signals blood vessels to relax and widen.

This breakthrough transformed cardiovascular medicine and led to advances in the treatment of heart disease, stroke, and erectile dysfunction.

In 1998, Furchgott shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.

Robert Francis Furchgott

South Carolina’s Nobel Legacy

Only three people born in South Carolina have received Nobel Prizes, but their discoveries have had an extraordinary global impact:

  • Charles H. Townes helped usher in the age of lasers, transforming science and technology.
  • Joseph L. Goldstein changed how physicians understand and treat cholesterol and heart disease.
  • Robert F. Furchgott uncovered the role of nitric oxide, reshaping cardiovascular medicine.

Together, these three South Carolinians demonstrate that world-changing discoveries can begin in places as diverse as Greenville, Sumter, and Charleston, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond the Palmetto State.

Charleston’s Main Library to Close for Major Renovation Project Beginning August 1

By Mark A Leon

Charleston County’s Main Library at 68 Calhoun Street will temporarily close Aug. 1 as work begins on an extensive renovation designed to modernize the downtown landmark and better serve the community. The renovation is expected to take about 18 months and marks the final phase of the library system’s voter-approved 2014 capital improvement program.

The project will create more accessible, family-friendly spaces by bringing children’s and teen services together on the same floor, refreshing public areas, upgrading technology, and expanding flexible programming spaces for community events and learning.

While the Main Library is closed, Charleston County Public Library will continue serving downtown patrons from a temporary location at 1142 Morrison Drive, where visitors will still be able to check out books, pick up holds, use public computers, access Wi-Fi, and participate in select library programs. The South Carolina Room has also been temporarily relocated as part of the renovation preparations.

Library officials say the renovation represents the final investment in a countywide modernization effort that has transformed library facilities across Charleston County over the past decade, ensuring the Main Library remains a vibrant community resource for years to come.

5 Great Live Music Venues Where You Can Dance, Discover Original Music and Feel Right at Home in Charleston, SC

By Mark A Leon

Charleston’s music scene is much more than cover bands on King Street. Across the city, you’ll find intimate clubs, neighborhood stages and legendary venues where touring artists share the spotlight with Lowcountry musicians. Whether you’re looking to dance until last call, hear the next great Americana songwriter or simply enjoy an authentic Charleston night out, these five venues capture the city’s diverse musical personality.

1. Charleston Pour House

If there’s one venue that embodies Charleston’s independent music culture, it’s the Charleston Pour House on James Island. Equal parts neighborhood gathering place and respected concert venue, the Pour House has built a reputation for booking original artists spanning jam bands, Americana, bluegrass, funk, reggae, indie rock and jazz. With both indoor and outdoor stages, nearly every night offers something different.

The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious. Locals, visitors, musicians and longtime regulars all mingle together, creating a community where everyone feels welcome. When the music gets moving, so does the crowd—making it one of Charleston’s best places to dance while discovering artists you may not have heard before.

2. The Commodore

Step inside The Commodore and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported into a vintage supper club. Velvet curtains, chandeliers, dim lighting and a sparkling disco ball create one of Charleston’s most distinctive nightlife experiences.

Live bands perform funk, soul, R&B, Motown, jazz, blues and dance classics almost every evening, and unlike many venues, dancing isn’t just encouraged—it’s expected. The crowd ranges from young professionals to longtime Charleston residents, creating an energetic yet sophisticated atmosphere where people come specifically to enjoy live musicians instead of simply background entertainment.

3. Music Farm

For more than three decades, Music Farm has been one of Charleston’s premier destinations for live concerts. Following its renovation, the venue continues attracting nationally touring artists alongside regional favorites covering rock, alternative, country, hip-hop, indie, electronic and pop.

Unlike traditional theaters, Music Farm’s standing-room layout keeps audiences close to the performers, making every concert feel energetic and personal. It’s the kind of venue where strangers quickly become concert buddies, united by a shared love of live music.

4. The Royal American

Tucked along Morrison Drive, The Royal American has become one of Charleston’s favorite gathering spots for musicians, artists and creatives. Its laid-back, industrial atmosphere perfectly complements an eclectic lineup of original bands featuring indie rock, country, Americana, folk, blues and alternative music.

The outdoor stage creates a backyard-party atmosphere where conversations happen between songs and the dance floor forms naturally as the night progresses. Rather than polished nightlife, The Royal American embraces authenticity—making it one of the city’s most beloved venues for discovering local talent.

Address: 970 Morrison Drive, Charleston, SC 29403

5. Forte Jazz Lounge

For those who appreciate exceptional musicianship, Forte Jazz Lounge offers one of Charleston’s most intimate listening experiences. The venue showcases nationally recognized jazz artists alongside talented regional performers, while also featuring evenings dedicated to Motown, soul, R&B and classic American songbook performances.

Although guests often remain seated for traditional jazz sets, themed evenings frequently transform into lively nights of dancing. Elegant without being intimidating, Forte attracts music lovers who genuinely come to listen, making every performance feel personal and memorable.

Charleston’s Soundtrack

One of the best things about Charleston’s live music scene is its authenticity. Instead of massive arenas, the city thrives on intimate venues where audiences connect directly with performers and where original music still matters. Whether you’re dancing to a funk band at The Commodore, discovering an emerging songwriter at the Charleston Pour House, catching a national touring act at Music Farm, enjoying an indie concert at The Royal American or soaking in world-class jazz at Forte, you’ll quickly understand why Charleston’s music community continues to earn a loyal following.

The next time you’re planning a night out, skip the playlists and experience Charleston the way locals do—with live music, great company and a dance floor that always welcomes one more person.

Fort Pemberton Park Opens a New Chapter on James Island

By Mark A Leon

Charleston’s newest waterfront green space is already becoming one of its most peaceful hidden gems. Fort Pemberton Park, now open at 221 Yates Avenue in the Riverland Terrace neighborhood of James Island, blends Lowcountry beauty with Civil War history in a way few places can.

Towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss frame winding walking paths that lead to the banks of the Stono River. Visitors can enjoy a new fishing dock, kayak launch, picnic shelter, benches, and ADA-accessible pathways that make the park welcoming to everyone. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will also find plenty to admire, with opportunities to spot bald eagles, wood storks, foxes, and other native wildlife.

The park also preserves one of Charleston’s most significant Civil War sites. Built in 1862, Fort Pemberton served as a key Confederate earthwork fortification protecting Charleston’s western approach along the Stono River. Today, instead of soldiers and cannons, the grounds invite families, walkers, paddlers, photographers, and history enthusiasts to experience a landscape where history and nature peacefully coexist.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet afternoon beneath centuries-old oaks, a place to launch a kayak, or simply another reason to fall in love with the Lowcountry, Fort Pemberton Park is a beautiful new addition to Charleston’s growing collection of public waterfront spaces.

Fresh from the Oven: 6 Charleston Bakeries Serving Bread, Pastries, and Plenty of Love

EVO Craft Bakery

By Mark A Leon

In Charleston, some of the city’s greatest treasures aren’t found in grand dining rooms or behind white tablecloths. They’re tucked into neighborhood bakeries where the lights come on long before sunrise, ovens glow in the quiet hours of the morning, and skilled bakers transform flour, butter, water, and time into something extraordinary.

Whether it’s a crusty sourdough loaf for the dinner table, a warm croissant paired with morning coffee, or a pastry that turns an ordinary day into a celebration, Charleston’s independent bakeries continue to remind us that the best things in life are often handmade.

Here are six local bakeries that are helping Charleston rise—one loaf at a time.

Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop

Fresh baguettes, challah, sourdough, focaccia, croissants, and pastries line the shelves each morning, while their sandwiches—served on house-made bread—have earned an equally devoted following. It’s the kind of neighborhood bakery that quickly becomes part of your weekly routine.

Sometimes the smallest bakeries leave the biggest impression.

Bright Light Bakery, founded by Nour Bizri, has become one of Charleston’s most inspiring artisan bakeries. Operating as a small-batch cottage bakery in West Ashley, Bright Light creates naturally fermented sourdough loaves, biscuits, croissants, scones, cookies, and seasonal pastries using simple, thoughtfully sourced ingredients.

What truly sets Bright Light Bakery apart is its mission. Beyond baking exceptional bread, the bakery was founded to encourage conversations surrounding mental health and the healing that can come through slowing down, creating something with your hands, and sharing food with others. Customers can find Bright Light Bakery at local markets, select Charleston retailers, and through weekly porch pickups.

A Taste of Community

Every loaf purchased from a local bakery supports a dream that begins well before dawn. While most of Charleston is still asleep, these talented bakers are mixing dough, shaping loaves, laminating pastry, and filling their shops with the unmistakable aroma of fresh bread.

Their work preserves generations of baking traditions while strengthening the local economy and creating gathering places where neighbors become regulars and strangers become friends.

The next time you’re craving fresh sourdough, a flaky croissant, or a sweet pastry made from scratch, skip the grocery store and visit one of these hometown bakeries. You’ll discover that Charleston’s best bread isn’t simply baked here—it’s made with passion, patience, and plenty of love.

Blast From The Past! 50s, 60, and 70s, An Original Charleston Musical: The Creative Minds Behind The Scenes

By Natalie DeMore

For over three decades, Brad and Jennifer Moranz, a husband-and-wife creative artistic/ theater team, have been bringing original musical productions to Charleston audiences year-round. Their latest show combines beloved hits from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s with an imaginative storyline that begins in an unlikely place: a vintage record store struck by a meteor.

The concept grew out of a shared love for the beautiful music of those eras.

“Basically, the inspiration is the fact that we love this music from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s,” Brad explained. “We wanted to create a show that would showcase that music.”

From there, they began searching for a dramatic framework that would allow those songs to come to life on stage. The idea evolved naturally—from vintage music to a vintage record store. Then came the twist that transformed the concept into a theatrical rock and roll thrilling adventure.

“We thought, ‘Imagine if a meteor came from outer space and collided with the record store, and suddenly all the records came to life.’ That’s how it started.”

A Lifetime in Theater

Brad and Jennifer have been creating musicals and musical revues together for 31 years, but their connection to the stage goes back much further.

“Jenny and I have been in theater our whole lives,” he said.

Before settling in Charleston, both worked professionally in New York. Jennifer performed as a Radio City Rockette and appeared in productions including 42nd Street. Her husband performed on Broadway in Singin’ in the Rain and played Seymour in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Their paths crossed while touring nationally with Singin’ in the Rain.

“We met in the national tour of Singin’ in the Rain, fell in love, got together, and have been working and creating stuff together ever since.”

Bringing Imagination to Life

For the pair, creating an original production is both exhilarating and challenging. Every show begins as an idea, existing only in their minds before it gradually takes shape through performers, choreography, music, and staging.

“It’s a very interesting process because the process begins with you imagining something and creating it in your imagination,” he said. “Then all of a sudden, you try to find people who can bring that to life.”

Watching those ideas become reality is one of the most rewarding parts of the process, but it also requires adaptation.

“Whenever you take things out of your mind and try to turn them into real life, you have to deal with, well, does it look like the way you imagined, or do you need to adjust? And so it’s a process.”

Jennifer and Brad both share these sentiments.

Passion That Never Fades

Their love of performance started early and has never diminished.

Asked how long he had been playing guitar, he smiled and credited one of the most influential bands in music history.

“I played the guitar since the Beatles came out; that would be since 1964.”

Like many great performers, Brad seems to trace his inspiration back to the moments when he first saw and was inspired by great theater and film, with the ultimate goal of being a part of that world.

“I think Jennifer agrees with me, what inspires us is what has inspired us since we were young. Watching either theater, film, whatever we saw and we went “I wanna do that, that’s so cool.” It never goes away; it’s just something that’s in you.”

,That passion has shaped their careers and continues to fuel every new production.

“We don’t go to work,” he said. “We go have fun. We work, but it’s fun.”

A Charleston Holiday Tradition

While audiences are enjoying their newest musical adventures, the team is already focused on another beloved production. Their annual Christmas show, a Charleston tradition for 31 years. It returns to the Charleston Music Hall this December.

This production attracts approximately 10,000 audience members year-round and runs for several weeks during the holiday season, something many Charleston residents cherish seeing each year.

“We have a great time,” he said. “We work on that pretty much year-round.”

A Message of Hope

Although their productions are packed with music, humor, and entertainment, there is a deeper theme that runs through nearly all of their work.

Asked whether this latest show carries a particular message, he offered a simple answer.

“Typically, our message is always one of hope.”

No matter the circumstances facing the characters onstage, that belief remains central to their storytelling.

“Hope is everything,” he said.

And perhaps that explains why their productions still continuesto resonate with audiences after more than three decades—combining creativity, nostalgia, and joy.  With the reminder that even in the most challenging moments, there is always reason to believe in something better.

Charleston, SC Lands Among LinkedIn’s Top U.S. Cities on the Rise for Jobs in 2026

By Mark A Leon

Charleston has long been celebrated for its historic streets, award-winning restaurants, and coastal beauty. Now, it is earning national attention for something equally important: opportunity.

According to LinkedIn’s newly released 2026 Cities on the Rise report, the Charleston metropolitan area ranks No. 6 in the nation among the fastest-growing U.S. metro areas for jobs, hiring momentum, and talent migration. The annual ranking highlights mid-sized cities where employers are expanding, professionals are relocating, and career opportunities continue to accelerate.

For Charleston residents, this recognition simply confirms what many have witnessed firsthand over the past several years.

It is also important to note that of the Top 25 listed, Charleston has the highest average home listing price: $928,265

Why Charleston Continues to Grow

The Charleston region has transformed from a tourism-driven economy into one of the Southeast’s most diverse employment markets.

Today’s economy is powered by a blend of industries including:

  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Aerospace
  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Logistics and shipping
  • Defense
  • Higher education
  • Hospitality and tourism

This diversity has made the region more resilient while attracting workers from across the country seeking both career advancement and an exceptional quality of life.

Major Employers Continue to Expand

Several nationally recognized employers anchor the Charleston economy.

Among the region’s largest employers are:

  • Joint Base Charleston
  • Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
  • Boeing South Carolina
  • Roper St. Francis Healthcare
  • Charleston County School District
  • The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center
  • College of Charleston

These organizations support thousands of jobs while helping attract suppliers, startups, research partners, and entrepreneurs throughout Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

Silicon Harbor Keeps Growing

Charleston’s reputation as “Silicon Harbor” continues to strengthen.

Technology companies, software startups, fintech firms, and creative agencies have increasingly chosen Charleston because of its educated workforce, lower operating costs compared to larger metropolitan areas, and strong entrepreneurial ecosystem.

At the same time, advanced manufacturers continue investing throughout the Lowcountry, creating opportunities in engineering, robotics, supply chain management, production, and skilled trades.

Healthcare remains another major driver of employment, with MUSC and regional hospital systems continually adding positions as the area’s population grows.

Talent Is Moving to Charleston

LinkedIn’s rankings measure more than job postings.

The report evaluates hiring growth, workforce migration, and where professionals are choosing to relocate. Charleston’s placement among the nation’s top emerging job markets reflects its ability to attract experienced professionals while retaining graduates from local colleges and universities.

That migration is helping fuel growth across industries ranging from healthcare and education to technology, finance, construction, and professional services.

Growth Brings New Challenges

Rapid success also presents challenges.

Housing affordability, transportation infrastructure, workforce housing, and traffic congestion remain major concerns for both employers and employees. As more people relocate to the region, local governments and business leaders continue investing in roads, public infrastructure, and housing initiatives designed to support long-term growth.

A Bright Future for the Lowcountry

Charleston’s economy today looks remarkably different than it did just two decades ago.

While tourism remains one of its signature industries, the region has matured into a nationally competitive employment center with opportunities spanning healthcare, aerospace, manufacturing, technology, logistics, education, and entrepreneurship.

Being named one of LinkedIn’s Top 10 Cities on the Rise is more than a ranking—it reflects the confidence employers, investors, and professionals have in Charleston’s future.

For job seekers, graduates, entrepreneurs, and businesses considering relocation, the message is clear: Charleston is no longer simply one of America’s favorite places to visit. It has become one of the country’s most promising places to build a career.
