Dorchester Paws reunites 18-year-old dog with its owner after its been missing for 3 years
A volunteer drove 6 hours away to reunite the dog with the owners, where the dog originally lived
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. –
Last week, Binky aka Mr. B (an 18-year-old dog) arrived at Dorchester Paws. Binky came into our shelter presenting with being severely matted, malnourished, had overgrown nails, rotting teeth, covered in fleas and with a whole slew of other medical issues that required immediate attention due to his age.
Upon intake, Mr. B. was completely shaved, received a full medical workup and received the life-saving medical treatment he so desperately needed thanks to the amazing medical team at Dorchester Paws. While cleaning him up, the staff scanned for a microchip, to only find out that he was someone’s and in fact, his owners live six hours away from Summerville, S.C.
When the owners were contacted, they expressed how Mr. B has been missing for over three years! They were absolutely devastated when he wasn’t found, as they did everything they could but had no luck in finding him. All they hoped for was for him to be found and scanned. They waited by the phone for years, waiting for the phone call that they then received on March 19, 2023. The family was in utter disbelief.
Mr. B was found wandering around where a good samaritan brought him immediately to the shelter to be scanned. What Dorchester Paws wishes more people would do.
With the effort of a dedicated volunteer, after six hours, Binky returned to his family after a long awaited 3 years. Tears were had by all, as this impossible journey was completed, Mr. B can rest peacefully with the family that rescued him from a shelter all those years ago.
“Binky’s story is not only heart wrenching, but a story of the importance of microchips and doing the right thing,” says Lanea Wilson, Manager of Dorchester Paws Pet Support Department. ” If someone would have got Binky scanned when he was first found in Georgia he could have been reunited a lot sooner. Somehow this little guy made it up to Summerville, got loose again and was finally brought in to be scanned for a microchip. Microchips truly are life saving and the best way to get a lost pet back home. If you find a lost pet, please go to the nearest vet office or animal shelter to get them scanned for a microchip- someone could be missing that pet, whether only a few hours or years, they may have a family desperately looking for them somewhere.”
Donations are a critical part of allowing Dorchester Paws to live out their mission to help animals like Binky, on a daily basis that come into their care needing life-saving medical treatment. To donate, visit dorchesterpaws.org.
