Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series Race #4

Sunday, Aug. 11, 7:15 a.m.

James Island County Park
This landmark series includes a 600-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. Participants are divided into: Open / Elite, Masters Open / Elite (Open/Elite competitors over the age of 40), Age Group, Clydesdale (men 220 pounds or greater), and Athena (women 165 pounds or greater). Registration includes one t-shirt for the series. For information and to register visit ccprc.com/CSTS. Spaces are limited and event is expected to sell out. Open to all abilities and fitness levels. A Tri Club Team Competition will be held at Race 3 on July 28. All individual team members must be registered for Race 3. This race is open to triathletes of all levels, including beginners. Accessible parking is available at the event site. Accessible port-a-let at event site. Open water swim. The swim starts in the water from a wading position. Charleston County Parks Emergency Services team in position on the water and the lake bank. The bike route is inside and the outside park on city roads. Charleston County officers in position at key intersections for safety. The run course is 2 loops inside the park on paved trails and roads.

This deep-water suspension fitness program is held in 4.5 feet of water. The non-weight bearing format is gentler on the body enabling participants to reap the benefits of cardio exercise without the impact of jarring, land-based movement. Classes are taught from the pool deck for easy viewing. Aquatic fitness belts and hand bells are provided for use during the 45-minute program. If the early bird gets the worm, the early birdwatchers get both! We can leave the worms for the avian life and enjoy finding birds at dawn. A birding professional will help you find the birds and help you to understand their strategies for success in the natural world. Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a flat, loop and benches are available along the trail route. The trails are unpaved. The program speed is moderately slow and contains periods of standing and gazing upwards.

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk 
Friday, Aug. 9, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve 
This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site boasts one of the largest bird lists in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see Painted Buntings and Wilson’s Plovers, plus much more. What to expect: This program is open to birders of all levels, including beginners. No accessible parking available. No restrooms available. The park includes paved surface that leads to natural, unimproved surface out to a sandy beach. The program route is out and back and is approximately one mile long total. The program route is flat leading to moderate elevation when crossing sand dunes and no benches are available along the trail. The program speed is moderately slow and requires periods of standing and gazing upwards.

Did you know there are more than a million insect species? Become familiar with some interesting local insects by collecting, observing, and then releasing them. The program route is a loop, and benches are available along the trail. The program speed is moderately slow to medium. Trails at this park are flat and are paved and consist of natural, unimproved surfaces.

Caw Caw Interpretive Center 
To talk about land in the Lowcountry is an automatic invite to talk about rice, who grew it, where it came from, and how the cultivation changed the landscape in ways that are still evident today. Caw Caw Interpretive Center provides one of the best local looks in the Lowcountry. What to expect: Accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables are available at the Welcome Center where the program begins and ends. The park includes natural, unpaved trails that are mostly flat. The program route is a loop and benches are available along the trail route. The program speed is moderately slow and includes periods of standing.

What is a transition? Where do I put my bike? Where do I keep my running shoes? What do I wear? How does this whole triathlon thing work anyway? If you have any of these questions (or more!) join Cynthia Wahl with Blue Sky Endurance at 725 Coleman Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant each Saturday at 3pm prior to the Charleston Sprint Triathlons. These informative clinics will cover all things triathlon, focusing on setting up your transition area at the race. Blue Sky Endurance will help you get organized, stay calm, and enjoy your triathlon adventure! Registration is not required.

Adventure Camp at Palmetto Islands – Trail Bike/SUP
Monday, Aug. 5 – Friday July 9, 5-Day session, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. 
Palmetto Islands County Park – Sweet Gum 
Young cyclists will be introduced to the proper handling and maintenance of a mountain bike. We will practice safe riding techniques initially on the flat trails around James Island County Park. We’ll then utilize our new knowledge and skills to ride some of Charleston’s local trail systems. Campers will also get to know the historic Pacific Island craft known as standup paddleboard. They will learn how to paddle properly and will be introduced to simple rescue techniques and safety protocols from a trained instructor. For additional camp information and schedules, click here.

Teen Venture Camp – Rock Climb

James Island County Park – Wappoo Center 
You can do it – stick that move on the 5.10c! We’re going to learn some terminology, strap on our harnesses, and do some rock climbing! This session will introduce the basics of knot tying, belaying, and climbing techniques.
