eLocal brewery and distillery release whiskey and ale for the holidays dubbed Double Barrel Drive By

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (November 12, 2021) –  Firefly Distillery, South Carolina’s oldest working distillery, is partnering with local craft brewery, Holy City Brewing to release Double Barrel Drive By, a new limited edition malt mash whiskey and barleywine ale pairing on Friday, November 26.

An ode to the proximity of the brewery and distillery, Double Barrel Drive By brings together two of Charleston’s best craft alcohol makers.”We loved the idea of a collaboration with our neighbors,” says Jay Macmurphy, head distiller at Firefly Distillery. “The end result gave us a great depth of flavor in our malt mash whiskey by starting with Holy City’s beer, aging in brandy and bourbon barrels.” Double-Barrel Drive-By is a two-part collaboration between Holy City Brewing and Firefly Distillery. The beer is a barleywine-style ale aged in Firefly’s brandy barrels while the liquor is a malt-based whiskey distilled from this beer, aged in those same barrels for one year.

A truly Charleston collaboration for the beer and whiskey lover. “It started as an idea to use Firefly’s barrels to age our beer and turned into an even stronger partnership,” says Chris Brown, head brewer at Holy City Brewing. “The two products together offer a limited edition gift that’s perfect for the season.” Exclusively available at the respective brewery and distillery, this limited edition pairing makes for a unique, local holiday gift.

To celebrate the release of the new whiskey and ale, Firefly Distillery is hosting a Black Friday celebration on Friday, November 26 starting at 12:00pm with food trucks, music, and spirits tastings. Local food trucks will include P&S New Jersey Philly Cheesesteaks, Bits ‘n’ Bytes, Miss Katie’s Sweets, and Charleston Caribbean Creole with live music from local reggae band Urban Roots from 2 – 5pm. Holy City Brewing will also be hosting an oyster roast with tasting flights featuring the newest brew. For more information about the distillery, Firefly Spirits, events, tours and tastings, visit www.fireflydistillery.com.

Palmetto Community Care needs your support this holiday season

First, I want to thank you for your past support of Palmetto Community Care. Whether you have chosen to donate through an event or in honor or memory of a loved one, please know that your support means a great deal for the important work that we do here each and every day.

Your support has helped a struggling client living with HIV find the mental health counseling he needed to process his anxiety so that he could secure employment and sustainable housing. That is really what your support provides more than anything – hope that is real and tangible and hope that helps to lift another human being out of pain and suffering. Our goal is to always help our clients find a path forward and to better manage this disease and eventually prosper and graduate beyond the need for our programs and services.

We believe no person living with HIV/AIDS should go without medical care, everyday resources, and emotional support.
Your support helped us as we helped a client after they were released from a local detention center. During an initial meeting the client revealed being addicted to IV drugs and had been in and out of detention centers across the United States since he was 18 years old. “I am happy with the way life is going; it is what I know and what I do.” Fast forward to one week after release. Our Specialized Medical Case Manager received a call. He had found a sober living home but needed medication and assistance with food and some clothing. After meeting, PCC was able to provide him with medications, a clothing voucher, personal hygiene bag and a grocery gift card. He is still doing well, checks in with SMCM weekly and together they are working on obtain client’s social security card and birth certificate so the client can be more successful in finding employment. This is made possible because of your support.

Your support helped us as we worked with a sexual abuse survivor who discovered she was HIV positive after the assault. We were quickly able to get her medical care, counseling and stable housing away from her abuser. Your donations do so much more than just keep the lights on or paying a medical bill. Your support allows us to help with the whole spectrum of issues that can keep HIV-positive women and men from getting the life-saving medical care that they need. When someone is in pain and suffering within a sea of instability and grief, taking medication or seeing a doctor regularly are often more than a client can do.

We have a lot of success stories that we could share stories that are made possible by you. Behind every number or statistic is a name; behind every name is a story; and every story PCC is able to be a part of is directly because of supporters like you. Having HIV can often lead to feelings of isolation and despair – you wake up one day and you get this diagnosis and then your whole world changes – your dreams seem out of reach. Our staff is there to work with everyone. I hope you join me and consider contributing towards helping others with a donation to Palmetto
Community Care.

Charleston Spotlight: Charleston chef, author and culinary historian Kevin Mitchell has co-authored a wonderful new book ‘Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes and Their Stories’

Charleston-based chef, author, and culinary historian Kevin Mitchell, along with his colleague David S. Shields have published a wonderful new book ‘Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes, and Their Stories’. Help Kevin celebrate this wonderful achievement. Learn more and buy local today.

We are so proud of Chef Mitchell.

About the Book

From the influence of 1920s fashion on asparagus growers to an heirloom watermelon lost and found, Taste the State abounds with surprising stories from South Carolina’s singularly rich food tradition. Here, Kevin Mitchell and David S. Shields present engaging profiles of eighty-two of the state’s most distinctive ingredients, such as Carolina Gold rice, Sea Island White Flint corn, and the cone-shaped Charleston Wakefield cabbage, and signature dishes, such as shrimp and grits, chicken bog, okra soup, Frogmore stew, and crab rice. These portraits, illustrated with original photographs and historical drawings, provide origin stories and tales of kitchen creativity and agricultural innovation. Historical “receipts” and modern recipes, including Chef Mitchell’s distillation of traditions in Hoppin’ John fritters, okra and crab stew, are also provided.

Because Carolina cookery combines ingredients and cooking techniques of three greatly divergent cultural traditions, there is more than a little novelty and variety in the food. In Taste the State Mitchell and Shields celebrate the contributions of Native Americans (hominy grits, squashes, beans), the Gullah Geechee (field peas, okra, guinea squash, rice, sorghum), and European settlers (garden vegetables, grains, pigs, cattle) in the mixture of ingredients and techniques that would become Carolina cooking. They also explore the specialties of every region—the famous rice and seafood dishes of the Lowcountry; the Pee Dee’s catfish and pinebark stews; the smothered cabbage, pumpkin chips, and mustard-based barbecue of the Dutch Fork and Orangeburg; the red chicken stew of the midlands; and the chestnuts, chinquapins, and corn bread recipes of the mountainous Upstate.

Taste the State presents the cultural histories of native ingredients and showcases the evolution of the dishes and the variety of preparations that have emerged. This is true Carolina cooking in all of its cultural depth, historical vividness, and sumptuous splendor—from the simple home cooking of sweet potato pone to Lady Baltimore cake worthy of a Charleston society banquet.

About the Authors

Kevin Mitchell is the first African American chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston in South Carolina. He has culinary arts degrees in occupational studies and management from the Culinary Institute of America and a master’s degree in southern studies from the University of Mississippi, where he studied Southern foodways, the preservation of Southern ingredients, and the history of African Americans in the culinary arts. In 2020 Mitchell was named a South Carolina Chef Ambassador.

David S. Shields is Carolina Distinguished Professor of the English Language and Literature Department at the University of South Carolina and the chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation. He is the author of numerous books, including Southern Provisions: The Creation and Revival of a Cuisine and The Culinarians: Lives and Careers from the First Age of American Fine Dining, and the recipient of the Southern Foodways Alliance’s Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award

Introducing ‘Females on Fire’: A Charleston Culinary Group – A community of female business owners in Charleston collaborating in a shared experience

Owner Courtney Buckley of Your Mom’s Donuts was interested in starting a women’s group for members of Charleston’s culinary community, including restaurant owners, chefs, bakers, brewers, distillers, farmers, vendors, cookbook authors, and more, so the team at CharlotteBergerPR helped make her dream a reality.

Females on Fire was born in October of 2021, showcasing the best of the best when it comes to female culinary talent in Charleston. The group meets once a month at member’s restaurants and bars to discuss everything from the staffing crisis to where to buy the best local chicken for an upcoming event.

“Females on Fire has a three-prong purpose of unifying women in the industry, creating a path for young women wanting to enter the industry, and bringing resources like funding, business opportunities, and educational experiences to others,” shares Buckley. “We had a great turnout of around a dozen female powerhouses show up to our first event, and we are beyond excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

Karalee Fallert, the owner of All Good Industries, (which encompasses Taco Boy, Wiki Wiki Sandbar, Park & Grove, and The Royal American), was one of the first women restaurant owners to become established in Charleston and is thrilled to finally see a group like this being formed. “It’s tough to get to know other women in the local F+B industry, as many of us are business owners and moms with little free time on our ends. I’m really looking forward to having a new network through Females on Fire to bounce ideas off of, ask questions and collaborate with!”

How do I join?

If interested in being a member of Females on Fire, please email Charlotte Berger of CharlotteBergerPR at Charlottepberger@gmail.com and she can send you an invite to their next event on Nov. 17.

Charleston’s newest spot Oddfellows Ice Cream introduces new eccentric ice cream flavors

Brooklyn-based ice cream brand, OddFellows Ice Cream Co., best known for its out-of-the-box and eccentric ice cream flavors and creative capsule collections, is launching its newest Holiday Capsule on November 12. This five-flavor capsule collection is inspired by the holiday traditions of members of the OddFellows team. Details on these tasty flavors are below:

Buckeye – Inspired by co-owner, Mohan Kumar

  • Flavor: A peanut butter-based ice cream with swirls of chocolate and mini buckeyes mixed throughout
  • Inspiration: Buckeyes were a staple growing up in Ohio (the “Buckeye State”). They were my absolute favorite holiday treat. It’s like the best version of a peanut butter cup.”

Italian Cookie Crumble – Inspired by Marketing Manager Chris Divito

  • Flavor: Almond paste base with chunks of rainbow cake, apricot jam swirls, and soft dark chocolate chunks.
  • Inspiration: ”I’ve been wanting to do this flavor for years. It’s my favorite cookie. I’M ITALIAN.”

Olive Oil Jelly Donut – Inspired by Head of Retail and Operations, Andy Mullins

  • Flavor: An olive oil ice cream with chunks of donuts and swirls of raspberry jam
  • Inspiration: “Raspberry jelly donuts fried in oil are my favorite way to celebrate the oily miracle of Hanukkah. Putting them in a classic OddFellows flavor like Olive Oil is a nod to both my Jewish traditions and my ice cream family. Make a latke ice cream sandwich with a scoop of this: a delicious double mitzvah.”

Poppycock – Inspired by Head of Planning and Production, Abby Lavin

  • Flavor: A popcorn based ice cream with swirls of caramel and cashew pieces
  • Inspiration: “Poppycock is my mom’s favorite. The candy shop close to our house growing up would only stock tins of it during the holidays. Poppycock is one of my favorite treats now because it has become nostalgic.”

Coquito – Inspired by Graphic Designer, Phil Negron

  • Flavor: A coconut ice cream with rum, cinnamon, and secret spices
  • Inspiration: “As a New York-born Puerto Rican, I hold a lot of pride for who I am and where I come from. I have a mom who makes Coquito every Christmas. No matter how long we spend apart, diving into a punch bowl full of cinnamon, coconut, and rum is our favorite way to celebrate our annual reunion.”
