Get ready to dance at Charleston County Parks’ Inclusive Silent Disco! People with disabilities, their families, and friends can enjoy a unique party experience with wireless glowing headphones and two live DJs spinning different tunes. Choose your vibe and get your groove on! Chaperone required for participants ages 15 and under. Pizza, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks provided.

Folly Beach Pier
Join us on Folly Beach for the Save the Light Half Marathon and 5K. Both USATF certified races start and finish near the Folly Beach Pier. Awards and post-race food provided. Registration is required and ends by phone until 5 p.m. or online until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Packet pick-up available at The Tides Hotel on Friday, Feb. 7 from 4 -7 p.m., and on race day, Saturday, Feb. 8 from 6:30-7:30 a.m. The race is open to runners of all levels, including beginners. Accessible parking available. Accessible port-a-lets at the event site and on course. Officers in position at key intersections for safety. The half marathon route is paved city roads. Belay Basics

Learn the ropes with our “Belay Basics” class, a comprehensive guide to the essential skill of top rope belaying in rock climbing. In this hands-on session, our experienced instructors will walk you through the fundamentals of belaying techniques, equipment usage, and safety protocols. Whether you’re a novice or looking to refresh your skills, this class is designed to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to securely manage the rope for your climbing partner.

Basketball Gymnasium at St John’s High School

This program focuses on enhancing fundamental basketball skills, including passing, shooting, defensive and offensive strategies, rebounding, and teamwork, within an engaging and enjoyable setting. Participants will be organized into age-appropriate groups and will have the opportunity to compete in league play, fostering both individual growth and team development.

Palmetto Islands County Park – Park Center
Identifying trees without their distinctive leaves demands scrutiny, dedication, and practice. Through the use of dichotomous keys, helpful instruction, and your powers of observation, learn more about twigs, buds, and bark! What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a loop and benches are available along the trail route. The program speed is moderately slow to medium. Trails at this park are flat and are paved and consist of natural, unimproved surfaces.

This event is tailored for those stepping into the climbing world for the first time, promising an evening of excitement and shared experiences. Our friendly and knowledgeable instructors will guide you through the essentials, from harnessing up to conquering your first climbing challenges. Join us for a night filled with laughter, encouragement, and the joy of discovering the thrill of climbing. Registration includes harness and shoe rental.

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk

Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve
This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site is a leader in the number of bird species seen in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see a variety of seabirds, sea ducks, and shorebirds such as Northern Gannet, Black Scoters, Piping Plover, and much more. What to expect: This program is open to birders of all levels, including beginners. No accessible parking available. No restrooms or water fountains available. The park includes paved surface that leads to natural, unimproved surface out to a sandy beach. The program route is out and back and is approximately one-mile-long total. Homeschool in the Parks: Weathering Climate Change

Beachwalker County Park
In this program, children will learn what differentiates climate from weather while gaining a better understanding of our world. Our coastal communities are experiencing the effects of a changing climate, and we will study that landscape, discuss solutions and participate in a fun activity. What to expect: Accessible parking is available, accessible restrooms and accessible water fountains are available near the Park Center where the program begins and ends. An accessible route to a natural sand beach is present and beach wheelchairs are available for checkout on a first come, first served basis. This program takes place on a sandy beach.

This dynamic course delves into the intricacies of lead climbing, focusing on advanced techniques, risk management, and mental resilience. Our expert instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of clipping, rope management, and route reading, preparing you to take the lead on both indoor and outdoor climbs. Join a community of aspiring lead climbers, push your boundaries, and experience the exhilaration of ascending vertical challenges with confidence. Gear up for a transformative journey into the world of lead climbing, where each ascent becomes a personal triumph! In order to gain the most knowledge from this class, you should be able to climb a 5.9 route.

Seabirding at Folly Beach Pier

Folly Beach Pier
In South Carolina, winter months bring a variety of oceangoing birds that can be hard to find during other times of year. The newly reconstructed Folly Beach Pier extends over 1,000 feet out over the ocean, an amazing vantage point for spotting sea ducks, seabirds, loons, grebes, and more that overwinter on the Atlantic. Bring your binoculars and join our experts as we look for the tell-tale shapes and flight patterns of species such as Black Scoter, Northern Gannet, Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, and much more. What to expect: This program is open to birders of all levels, including beginners. Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, changing rooms, and water fountains are available at this park. There is an accessible ramp to the park office/gift shop and an accessible route to a natural sand beach. Accessible picnic tables are available under and on top of pier. The program speed is moderately slow and requires periods of gazing upwards.

Slave Chefs and the Creation of American Cuisine

McLeod Plantation Historic Site – Pavilion
Join food historian and documentarian Julian Gooding as he shares the history of the Lowcountry through the culinary arts. Hidden in the kitchens of presidents and families of high standing were the slave cooks. Gooding will share the stories of Hercules, Caesar, and James Hemmings. Participants will learn and sample the first known recipe for mac and cheese brought to America by Mr. Hemmings and sample a West African dish still popular in today’s American South. What to expect: This program will take place at the McLeod Plantation Historic Site Pavilion where seating is available for all participants. The program location is outside in a shaded area. A small, tasting portion of food will be provided to each participant. A list of ingredients will be available during the program. McLeod Plantation Historic Site has accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables. Trails throughout the property are of a natural, unpaved surface. Thanks to the generous support of the Charleston County Parks Foundation, this program is free. Registration is strongly recommended to guarantee you have a spot.

Junior Naturalist: Feathered Friends
Saturday, Feb. 22, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Palmetto Islands County Park – Sweet Gum shelter
Bring your curiosity and engage all of your senses while exploring natural habitats at your county parks! Led by Charleston County Park’s Education staff, the multi-seasonal Junior Naturalist program series offers a wide variety of fun and educational nature-based activities focused around a central theme. Children who attend 8 classes earn the title of a Certified Junior Naturalist! Through hands-on activities and an interactive nature ramble, participants will learn about bird adaptations, behaviors, and how to identify common species. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at this park. This program will take place in an open-aired shelter and will include a walk to observe birds. Trails are paved and flat and the program speed is moderate to slow. Benches are located along the program route, which is a loop. Periods of standing and gazing upwards to observe wildlife are part of this program.
