Gullah Burial Practices

McLeod Plantation Historic Site

Gullah spiritual practices have a long and rich history. Activities at funerals or a “homegoing” have special meanings that extend back to West Africa. Join us as we explore the meaning behind the burial practices and traditions. Participants will take a brief tour through the cemetery. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at the Welcome Center. A portion of the tour will take place in a densely vegetated cemetery with narrow, uneven trails made of natural, unpaved surfaces. The tour pace is slow and requires periods of standing, bending over, and squatting.

There’s a lot to learn about climbing; getting your footing, learning the lingo, and starting out can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re new to climbing, or just trying to get past the crux on your project, our Intro to Climbing Technique class will help you reach your climbing goals. This 90-minute class will help kick off your new adventure with a 1:6 instructor to student ratio and lots of small group and partner work. Instruction takes place on both ropes and boulders, and the class will include your gear rental, too!

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk

Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve
This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site boasts one of the largest bird lists in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see spring arrivals such as Painted Buntings and Wilson’s Plovers, plus much more.

In this session, learn how to incorporate color into your journal with watercolor paints. Bring your preferred journal and we’ll provide the rest. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at this park. This program will include a walk to the fishing dock. The trails are paved and flat and the program speed is moderate to slow. Benches are located along the program route, which is out and back. Periods of standing and gazing upwards and downwards to observe wildlife are part of this program.

In order to gain the most knowledge from this class, you should be able to climb a 5.9 route.

Understanding the Rice Culture

To talk about land in the Lowcountry is an automatic invite to talk about rice, who grew it, where it came from and the how cultivation changed the landscape in ways that are still evident today. Caw Caw Interpretive Center provides one of the best local looks in the Lowcountry. What to expect: Accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables are available at the Welcome Center where the program begins and ends. The park includes natural, unpaved trails that are mostly flat. The program route is a loop and benches are available along the trail route. The program speed is moderately slow and includes periods of standing.

Benefits of Bats

No matter where you live, there are likely bats nearby, which is good since we rely on bats to have healthy ecosystems. They eat insects, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, inspire innovation, and serve as prey to other animals. A single bat can eat up to its body weight in insects each night. We will search for bats that can be found in our region and learn about what we can do to help the conservation of this unique mammal.  What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a flat loop and benches are available along the trail route. The trails are unpaved. The program speed is moderately slow and will require periods of standing and gazing upwards.

Tea Farm Creek Canoe Trip

Paddle into Tea Farm Creek alongside a trained naturalist to witness firsthand how human history has impacted the landscapes around us. View one of the only naturalized understories of tea plants in the country as you travel through abandoned rice fields and forests that have been reclaimed by salt marsh.  What to expect: Accessible parking is available. Accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are all available near the Welcome Center where program begins and ends. While taking part in this activity, participants are required to sit for extended periods of time, bend knees, reach and pull with torso, and climb in and out of boats.
