Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series Race #1

This landmark series includes a 600-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. Participants are divided into: Open / Elite, Masters Open / Elite (Open/Elite competitors over the age of 40), Age Group, Clydesdale (men 220 pounds or greater), and Athena (women 165 pounds or greater). Registration includes one t-shirt for the series. Spaces are limited and event is expected to sell out. Open to all abilities and fitness levels. Guests will enjoy a performance by Acro, Charleston SC and live music by reggae sensation, Mystic Vibrations starting at 6 p.m. Yoga begins at 6:30 p.m. A kids yoga class provided by Empowered Minds will be offered concurrently. West County Aquatic Center
This deep-water suspension fitness program is held in 4.5 feet of water. The non-weight bearing format is gentler on the body enabling participants to reap the benefits of cardio exercise without the impact of jarring, land-based movement. Classes are taught from the pool deck for easy viewing. Aquatic fitness belts and hand bells are provided for use during the 45-minute program.What to expect: This class is open to all levels, including beginners. Accessible parking, route to office, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables available. Two aquatic chair lifts available for accessible pool entry/exit. Pool depth is 4.5 feet with zero depth entry area. Fee: $64

Join Charlie in this Hatha yoga class specially designed for climbers. In this class we will experiment with body position and the application of force to develop muscle memory and effective breathing practice. We will move at a slow to moderate pace focusing on healthy range of motion and sustainable form. The goal is to learn to think critically about our body’s position so that we can problem solve/improvise while rock climbing.

Sankofa African Rice Party
Saturday, June 1, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Caw Caw Interpretive Center
Join food historian and documentarian Julian Gooding as he shares the history and recipes of enslaved Africans. Their knowledge of rice cultivation made Charleston one of the richest cities in the world. We will celebrate and honor their legacy as we taste several party rice recipes prepared throughout Africa today. What to expect: This program will take place at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center picnic area where seating is available for all participants. The program will take place outside in a shaded area. A small, tasting portion of food will be provided to each participant and a list of ingredients will be available during the program. The Caw Caw Interpretive Center has accessible parking, restrooms, water fountains, and picnic tables. Trails throughout the property are of a natural, unpaved surface. Thanks to the generous support of the Charleston County Parks Foundation, this program is free. Registration is strongly recommended to guarantee you have a spot.

Beachcombing can be a fun way to search for interesting finds in the intertidal zone. Join us as we investigate creatures both above and beneath the sand. Ages: 18 months to 6 years old What to expect: Accessible parking is available and accessible restrooms and accessible water fountains are available near the Dunes House where the program begins and ends. An accessible route to a natural sand beach is present and beach wheelchairs are available for checkout on a first come, first served basis. This program is mostly stationary and takes place on a sandy beach.

Caw Caw: Walking on History

Caw Caw Interpretive Center
The Stono Rebellion, the largest uprising of people who were enslaved in the British colonies, took place in 1739 within a 15-mile radius of the Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Come and walk on the actual ground where a key event in the rebellion occurred. After the tour, a discussion of the event and the implications will be held. The Stono Rebellion changed the face of slavery and the consequences of the uprising centered the Gullah Geechee community. Join us for this very special walk. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a flat loop and benches are available along the trail route. The trails are unpaved. The program speed is moderately slow.

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk

Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve
This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site boasts one of the largest bird lists in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see spring arrivals such as Painted Buntings and Wilson’s Plovers, plus much more.

These informative clinics will cover all things triathlon, focusing on setting up your transition area at the race. Paddle into Tea Farm Creek alongside a trained naturalist as the sun rises to witness firsthand how human history has impacted the landscapes around us. View one of the only naturalized understories of tea plants in the country as you travel through abandoned rice fields and forests that have been reclaimed by salt marsh. What to expect: Accessible parking is available. Accessible restrooms, water fountains and picnic tables are all available near the Welcome Center where program begins and ends. While taking part in this activity, participants are required to sit for extended periods of time, bend knees, reach and pull with torso, and climb in and out of boats.

Young cyclists will be introduced to the proper handling and maintenance of a mountain bike. We will practice safe riding techniques initially on the flat trails around James Island County Park. We’ll then utilize our new knowledge and skills to ride some of Charleston’s local trail systems. Campers will also get to know the historic Pacific Island craft known as standup paddleboard. In this 5-day course, we’re going to get vertical on some real rock at Pilot Mountain State Park in Pinnacle, North Carolina! We depart Charleston on Monday and explore climbing technique, equipment, safety, and belaying. Tuesday through Thursday we will advance our climbing technique on the mountain face and return to James Island County Park on Friday. Jr. Lifeguard I (10-11) at Folly Beach County Park

Folly Beach County Park – Dunes House
Participants will become familiar with aquatic environments, its hazards, and the demands of the job of a lifeguard. Junior Lifeguards will be actively involved with CCPRC beach and waterpark lifeguards, learning the basics of aquatic rescue. This is a very physically demanding program in which students are required to participate in running, ocean swimming, and lifeguarding drills. First-time participants must pass a 75-yard swim test prior to the first day of the session. Swim tests are scheduled at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mt. Pleasant at Splash Island at 9am on May 25 and June 8, and at James Island County Park at Splash Zone at 9am on June 1 and June 15. Minimum enrollment required two weeks prior to the first day. Kayakers will learn the graceful operation and control of a sea kayak on the sparkling lake at James Island County Park. Trained camp personnel will provide instruction in proper paddling techniques, wet exits, and kayak rescues. After obtaining confidence and comfort on the lake, training will culminate in a day paddle in one of our beautiful Charleston-area waterways. We will also have some fun “rattling the chains” as we learn to play disc golf. Campers will learn about equipment basics, throwing techniques, and how to work as a team while experiencing James Island County Park’s 18-hole course. Jr. Lifeguard I (10-11) at Isle of Palms County Park

Isle of Palms County Park
Participants will become familiar with aquatic environments, its hazards, and the demands of the job of a lifeguard. Junior Lifeguards will be actively involved with CCPRC beach and waterpark lifeguards, learning the basics of aquatic rescue. This is a very physically demanding program in which students are required to participate in running, ocean swimming, and lifeguarding drills. First-time participants must pass a 75-yard swim test prior to the first day of the session. Swim tests are scheduled at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mt. Pleasant at Splash Island at 9am on May 25 and June 8, and at James Island County Park at Splash Zone at 9am on June 1 and June 15. Adventure Camp at Palmetto Islands – Canoe/Longboard

Palmetto Islands County Park – Sweet Gum
This course will introduce participants to the art of canoeing by practicing paddling techniques through fun games and instruction. Campers will learn about communication and cooperation in order to navigate their tandem canoes and will also practice rescue techniques. Lastly, a day trip to the beautiful tannin-rich blackwater of the Edisto River will put our skills to the test. Campers will also learn some longboard basics with fun trails around JICP. In this session, we will learn the skills necessary to master a whitewater kayak on both flat water and Class I-II whitewater. On Monday, we will leave for Western North Carolina and base camp at Tsali Recreation Area. Throughout the week, we will build our skills on Lake Fontana and paddle the Tuckaseegee River. This course does not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it does provide a confidence-building, fun, loving experience as a foundation for a lifetime of aquatic learning.
