Where the Wild Things 5K Run/Walk and Wild Kids Dash – SOLD OUT
Saturday, March 1, 8:30 a.m.
Caw Caw Interpretive Center
THIS RACE IS SOLD OUT. Kids Dash registration still available.
Walkers, joggers, and runners of all ages, come explore your wild side on the scenic nature trails at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. An award ceremony with food and beverages will be held immediately afterward. Family friendly yoga and other activities will go on throughout the morning. Where the Wild Things 5K Run/Walk is one of three 5K races in our 5K Trail Run/Walk Series; for more information visit https://ccprc.com/1455/Where-the-Wild-Things-Run-5K. New! Wild Kids Dash: After the 5K, we invite children ages 3-7 of all abilities to dash across the finish, too. Registration is required and is a separate fee of $5, including a finisher medal. Parents or guardian must be present. This is an untimed event. This race is open to runners and walkers of all levels, including beginners. Accessible parking and restrooms available. All trails are of a natural, unimproved surface. Loop course with water station. Registration ends Feb. 26.

Toast Under the Oaks

Come enjoy Toast Under the Oaks while exploring Johns Island County Park. Guests will enjoy wine, beer, and live music from Hollifield, while experiencing the beauty of this 738-acre park. Food truck fare will be available for purchase on-site from Uhane and Smash City Burgers.

Come out to Palmetto Islands County Park to enjoy live music from the local Grateful Dead cover band, The Reckoning! Gates open at 11 a.m. Live music begins at 12. You are encouraged to bring your own tables and chairs to set up. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No outside food, alcohol, or coolers permitted.

Our expert instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of clipping, rope management, and route reading, preparing you to take the lead on both indoor and outdoor climbs. In order to gain the most knowledge from this class, you should be able to climb a 5.9 route.

This program empowers adults 50+ to continue to explore, discover, and grow. Come out and flingsome arrows! We’ll start with the basics of archery and you’ll soon find that “inner child” as you start hitting those bull’s-eyes.

Homeschool in the Parks: Powerful Pollinators
Friday, March 14, 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Palmetto Islands County Park
It’s not just bees! Pollinators of many shapes and sizes play an important role in our ecosystems. Learn how these vital actors interact with plants to provide food for themselves while also enabling plants to produce the fruits and vegetables we know and love. What to expect: Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at this location. The program route is a loop, and benches are available along the trail. The program speed is moderately slow to medium. Trails at this park are flat and are paved and consist of natural, unimproved surfaces.

Lighthouse Inlet Bird Walk
Friday, March 14, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve
This walk focuses on the incredibly diverse northeast end of Folly Island. Once the home of a Coast Guard station, this Heritage Preserve protects maritime forest, beach, dune, and marsh habitats for wildlife. This site boasts one of the largest bird lists in South Carolina. At this time of year, we hope to see spring arrivals such as Painted Buntings and Wilson’s Plovers, plus much more. What to expect: This program is open to birders of all levels, including beginners. No accessible parking available. No restrooms available. The park includes a paved surface that leads to a natural, unimproved surface out to a sandy beach. The program route is out and back and is approximately one-mile-long total. The program route is flat leading to moderate elevation when crossing sand dunes and no benches are available along the trail. The program speed is moderately slow and requires periods of standing and gazing upwards.

Understanding the Rice Culture
Saturday, March 15, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Caw Caw Interpretive Center
To talk about land in the Lowcountry is an automatic invite to talk about rice, who grew it, where it came from, and how the cultivation changed the landscape in ways that are still evident today. Caw Caw Interpretive Center provides one of the best local looks in the Lowcountry. Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, accessible water fountains, and accessible picnic tables are available at the Welcome Center where the program begins and ends.

Basic Climbing Rescues

Junior Naturalist: Plants and People
Saturday, March 29, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
James Island County Park – Stono shelter
Bring your curiosity and engage all of your senses while exploring natural habitats at your county parks! Led by Charleston County Park’s Education staff, the multi-seasonal Junior Naturalist program series offers a wide variety of fun and educational nature-based activities focused around a central theme. Children who attend 8 classes earn the title of a Certified Junior Naturalist! We depend on plants for food, shelter, medicine, and more! Spend time with us as we learn about the amazing plant kingdom through a study of anatomy, diversity, and plant uses. Accessible parking, accessible restrooms, and accessible water fountains are available at this park. The program will take place in an open-aired shelter and will include a walk throughout the park.
