Biggest con is lack of regional planning to deal with the phenomenal growth that has occurred. This has resulted in horrible traffic problems that have gotten exponentially worse. There is no relief in the near future.
Another pro, the arts scene. For you, it might have fallen into your “interests” pro, but the arts scene for a city this size deserves special mention. Few cities this size in this day and time can boast having a full time orchestra, let alone something like Spoleto, one of the best arts festivals in the US.
As a native it is always intriguing to see why folks move here. You list is right on for a new person moving into the area. The cons are a way of life for us locals.
The biggest problem Charleston has(con) is that it was discovered by Yankees and others wanting to escape crowded cities, traffic, horrible winter weather, etc and have moved here to make the same problems for us. Now, our sleepy city has to move into the big league to figure out how to contend with traffics snarls, poor infrastructure and lack of planning to house and provide training for the people moving here.
I am watching downtown becoming one big hotel. So, Charleston will become another big city soon and maybe some folks will leave because it lost it’s charm.
