Join food historian and documentarian Julian Gooding as he takes you on a journey through the rich history of pecans in South Carolina. But this event is more than just a cooking class. Julian will also share the poignant and emotional story of Ashley’s Cotton Sack. The sack belonged to a young, enslaved girl named Ashley who was sold away from her mother never to see her again. Among the meager belongings in the sack were a braid of her mother’s hair, a single dress, and a handful of pecans – an enduring symbol of love and loss. This artifact, now on display at the International African American Museum, continues to be a powerful reminder of the human cost of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit. Don’t miss this unforgettable program where food, history, and emotion come together in a celebration of South Carolina’s cultural heritage. Whether you’re a history buff, a food enthusiast, or both, A Handful of Pecans promises to be an inspiring and enriching experience. Join us for a taste of the past and leave with a deeper understanding of the connections between food, history, and the human experience. What to expect: This program will take place at the McLeod Plantation Historic Site Pavilion where seating is available for all participants. The program location is outside in a shaded area.
