Caw Caw Interpretive Center
This course is an introduction to exploring and documenting the microscopic world around us. The goal of this training is to equip students with knowledge and skills to begin exploring the microscopic environment much as they do the macroscopic environment. To achieve this goal, we will cover the tools and skills needed to get started before putting them into practice. Topics to be covered include: the basics of using a light microscope, manipulating your light to improve what you see, preparing slides, collecting samples, general taxonomy of microbes, and how to document with photography. We will explore a variety of micro-habitats with field collections from around the Caw Caw Interpretive Center, the headquarters for the Charleston Master Naturalist program. This site, part of Charleston County Parks, is rich in natural and cultural history and features habitats such as forested wetlands, freshwater marshes, and brackish water marshes. This class will be taught by Dr. Dave Eslinger. Dave is a retired oceanographer that specialized in plankton dynamics. He has studied plankton on scales from the microscopic, using expensive inverted microscopes, to global, using even more expensive satellites. He has worked at NASA, was a faculty member at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and just retired after a career as an oceanographer with NOAA in Charleston, SC. He has been interested in “hobby-level” microscopy and photomicroscopy since he was a child and is a 2019 graduate of the Charleston Master Naturalist program. For SC Master Naturalists, this class counts as 5.5 hours of advanced training. For SC Master Naturalists who have not visited this site as part of your course, this class counts as 5.5 hours of advanced training towards SC Statewide Master Naturalist Certification in the Coastal Zone.
